Humanizing Technology

The ability to project photographs and videos, give presentations, and access online educational applications can be of great benefit to students when utilized by a skilled teacher. In the lab, technology presents students with the opportunity to extend their senses and take measurements with great accuracy. Some students may greatly benefit from the use of assistive devices that help them overcome learning challenges.

At the same time, we recognize the great temptations and distractions that accompany modern technology. There can be an alienating depersonalization when modern technology is used as a substitute for real learning. With this in mind, we aim to be prudent in our proper usage of technology in the classroom. In general, we give a certain pride of place to the tried-and-true practices of taking notes, annotating by hand, and reading from paper copies of books.

Our Approach

We treat technology as a resource to be governed by prudence, ensuring it remains a tool rather than a distraction.

  • A Space for Freedom: To foster deep friendships rooted in Christ and serious conversation, students are required to check in their smartphones at the beginning of each day.
  • The Pride of Place: We prioritize tried-and-true practices: taking notes by hand, annotating physical texts, and reading from paper copies of books.
  • Deep Reading over Data: We prioritize the insightful reading of whole books over the fragmented collection and manipulation of digital data.
  • Limited Screen Time: Teachers limit the use of screens in the classroom to moments when they are strictly necessary for the lesson.
  • A Supportive Community: Our parent community works together to ensure students do not experience peer pressure to join social media or use smartphones.

    • By stressing the beautiful and the real, we provide a sanctuary from digital noise, allowing students to develop the disciplined habits of patience and concentration necessary for true wisdom.
